August Town is a village in St. Andrew, Jamaica, that is named to commemorate the date of the emancipation of the slaves on August 1, 1838. Emancipation Day was formerly one of the most important holidays in Jamaica, but it ceased to be a holiday after the country gained independence in 1962.
